Lawrence
Cromwell describes his work as “a
dark and sardonic roller coaster ride for adults.”
Indeed, Cromwell’s brightly colored paintings speak
of playful yet heady metaphors. Dappled with twisting
chains of erratic drawings, his paintings reflect a meditation
“on the tangle and chaotic pulse of consciousness
that swings from the poignant to the prurient.”
Stylistically and symbolically, he borrows from both low
and high art to illustrate themes such as domestic anxiety,
consumption and accumulation; which transcend into ghost-like
expressions of their effect on the human psyche.
Cromwell
currently lives in Maryland where he is adjunct faculty
at Towson University. He received his Bachelor of Fine
Arts from the University of Tennessee and his Masters
of Fine Arts form the Rhode Island School of Design. He
has exhibited in the Providence area, in Maryland, Washington
DC and New York.
